09/23/18 - September "Ugly Paper" Challenge

I skipped August, and I don't think I posted July...
I will have to check and if not, post later..
But today I bring you my creation for the "Ugly Games" challenge for September 2018.

A re-cap of the rules:

1. After signing up, the host gives your name and address to another participant
2. The other participant sends you 2 "ugly" papers and at least one ugly embellishment
3. You MUST use both papers; the embellishment(s) is optional
4. You are allowed to use other items as well, as long as the 2 "ugly" papers are included in the layout
5. You are allowed to alter the papers and, if used, the embellishment(s) but they must still be recognizable

Uglies:

My
12x12
Traditional Layout

"Love Is Love"

 Journaling:
"As long as my kids are happy, I'm happy and Joseph is VERY happy right now!"

My son, Joseph, is the one w/ the glasses.
This is him w/ his fiancée
I stole the photos from his Instagram Stories, LOL

The wedding is in May 2019.

Ugly Papers are the BG and the blue flowered paper and the ugly embellishment I used, out of the 3 given to me, is the "Patriotic Top Hat".

I used the top hat for 2 reasons:
1 - Matches my son's Captain America shirt, which BTW was a total coincidence; I didn't even notice he was wearing it until I printed the photo!
2 - Same Sex Marriage is legal in the USA

06/28/18 - June 2018 "Ugly Paper" Challenge

Just sharing my layout for the June 2018 "Ugly Paper" Challenge

12x12
Traditional

Here are the rules of the challenge:

 The original Papers/Embellishment:

(Just FYI - my partner knows I don't care for "baby" papers or "flower" paper ... she tried to stump me, but I actually like these!)

 My creation:

"Hey There, Adventure"

The journaling reads:
"When I told Madison her Daddy was in the sky getting ready to jump out of a plane, this is what she did.
February 18, 2007"

Photos from when my husband went Tandem Skydiving back in...2007; geez time flies!
My daughter was only 5 at the time - she's now 16.
I have not scarpped a single photo of this event so I'm glad to finally have done so... 11 years later!

If you can't tell I did use both of the ugly papers: the BG is the airplane paper and the roses around my daughter's photo I fussy cut out of  the rose PP.
I did not use the Ugly Embellishment.
I tried, I really did, but in the end it just did not work!

*BTW - I realized as I was posting the photo on Instagram that I used the BG paper upside down!
Oops, LOL .... Oh well!

TFL!

02/24/18 - February 2018 "Ugly Paper" Challenge

Hello!
Today I'm bringing you my latest "Ugly Paper Challenge" layout.

First a reminder of the rules (you can skip this part if you already know them):

February 2018 "UGLIES":

NOTE:
That glitter paper is the UGLIEST ugly I have EVER received.
I hate glitter...it gets everywhere and the BG paper was thick, like cardboard so I had  A LOT of trouble cutting into it!
Anyway, this is what I came up with:

"Bird Whisperer"
Journaling:
"Never a dull moment around here!
Found this little guy, with a slightly injured wing, on my front porch this morning.
At first he was frightened of me and then, when I went to give him some food, he just jumped into my hand!
He was attached to me pretty much all morning which made it difficult to get ready for work, LOL
He has a new home now though... after I left, David took him to our neighbors, who have birds, and they took him in.
I'm glad he's safe but I miss him already!
June 20th, 2017"
.
.
.
Details:
As I said the glitter paper was a b**ch to work with...
so I punch a few half-circles out w/ a small punch (which was VERY difficult) and glued a few random pieces of glitter in a few places on the layout.
I added tape over the punched circles to prevent the glitter from falling off.
I also used the full piece of the flower patterned paper, as my BG, and the huge feather embellishment.
I found a 12x12 bird patterned paper in my stash and used some of it as accent pieces (one being a very large accent piece!)
Overall I'm happy.

BTW -  I usually keep the leftovers of my uglies and put them in my scrap stash, but the rest of that glitter paper is going straight in the trash!
Good Riddance!

01/18/18 - Dec 2017 / Jan 2018 "Ugly Paper" Challenge

Hi, there!
I'm here to share not one, but two, Ugly paper layouts!
I didn't realize until I was writing my post about January's papers that I never shared December's!
Actually I have another I need to share in my archives, I'm a bit behind...but that one will be for a later post.

Okay here we go!

First a reminder of the rules (you can skip this part if you already know them):

"January Uglies"
That "hopes and dreams" card is made of a flimsy plastic material

 "Her Christmas Hopes and Dreams"
Journaling:
"Madison was thrilled to get these stuffed animals for Christmas.
She -REALLY- wanted the Five Nights at Freddy's fox; the pig was just a bonus surprise!
12.25.16"

As you can see I used the paper on the right as my BG.
The "veggie" paper I used to mat my photos but I hid what I could and turned the rest into mistletoe w/ red self-adhesive pearls.
The "Hopes and Dreams" embellishment I used as part of my title.
The red and white flags are "sticky-notes" that came from the Target dollar spot as did the silver stars.
I finished w/ a Studio Calico, "This Magic Moment" 3x4 card, which I trimmed down, a winter sticker from Echo Park, Christmas-themed word stickers (that I have had in my stash for YEARS!) and finally a sticker from the Simple Stories Emoji paper and embellishment set that I am currently so in love w/ ("All The Heart Eyes" is right!)
In the end I feel like I really pulled off the festive feeling of Christmas despite what I started w/; and I feel pretty proud about it!

.
.
.
.

BTW - if you're interested in seeing w/ Joseph got that same year I also scrapped it in Ugly Papers; December's set...

.
.
.
.
.

As always, first the papers:

"December Uglies"

And the layout...

"Gag Gift"

(Get it? "gag"... LOL)

Journaling:
"What's worse than coal in your stocking? Poop in your gift!
Don't be alarmed, it was fake.
It was accompanied by $1 store underwear covered in chocolate syrup and...$200! Merry Christmas, Joseph!12.25.16"

A creative but gross way to give money, for sure!
(add this to your list, Cindy! LOL!)
Joseph was so startled he tossed the box aside...but once we assured him it was fake, he reluctantly dug in until he found his gift: $200.

Again I used one paper as the BG and the other to mat the photo.
I backed the photo a second time w/ a white scrap of paper from my stash, in order to break up the 2 busy patterns.
The Ugly Embellishment frame I used as part of my title design...
and some more of those super cute emoji stickers!

As usual I had a really great time w/ this challenge and will continue participating throughout 2018!

11/27/17 - November "Ugly Paper" Challenge

 Good Morning!

Hope you all had  a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Mine was...
😄

Today I'm sharing my "Ugly" Papers and Layout for November 2017

Ugly - November 2017

"In Memoriam"
(the Duck)
Journaling:
"Missing 'Howard', our neighbor's duck. He was a regular visitor to our backyard. He spent more time in our yard than his own. We enjoyed having him around and Hamlet having a 'Farm Animal' friend. But suddenly he stopped coming over and we found out he died. We didn't even know his name...we just called him Howard after the 'Howard the Duck' Movie"

We're not sure exactly when 'Howard' stopped coming around but eventually David and I spoke about it saying that neither of us had seen him in a while.
Though we technically didn't have to take care of him, we thought of him as our own: he drank the water out of our animals' water bowl, he played in our animals' pool, he ate bugs out of our grass and plants, he spent a lot of time sleeping, walking, pooping (yuck), exploring, and just hanging out in our yard and also liked to follow Hamlet around.
IDK if Hamlet ever really thought of 'Howard' as a friend but we did, and we really do miss him!

.
.

For those of you who might not think the papers are ugly... I really don't either, but I am not a huge fan of frilly papers, or flowers and glitter and the person who sent me my papers knows this... and she was trying to "get me".
But I actually like the papers and they wound up working well w/ my photos!

I used the butterfly/flowery/glittery PP as the BG and the Rooster PP as accent pieces: 2 circles and 1 torn photo mat
Fun fact: I've really been into tearing lately!
I also used 1 of the pointing hand embellishments I was sent.

The pig and duck stickers are from a cheap sticker book I bought at Michaels; 258 Stickers for $1.
#DEAL
I have already gotten good use out of them:

BTW - this is layout #89 of my 75 Layout Goal for 2017.

08/28/17 - August "Ugly Paper" Challenge

Hi,

My latest layout was created mainly for the August Ugly Paper Challenge.

First a reminder of the rules (you can skip this part if you already know them):

"August Uglies" (and yes that is a FROG!)

Well, here's what I came up w/:

Anniversary 13

Journaling:
" 'Well, that escalated quickly!' *
Senor Frogs, Vegas w/ Ricky and Marivel
07.15.14"

*a Will Ferrell, as 'Ron Burgundy', quote from the movie "Anchorman"
I thought the quote was funny and fitting to the photos that start off w/ us all looking "nice and innocent" and wind up w/ us looking like complete "party animals", LOL

BTW - I know I misspelled Vegas and I fixed it IRL after the fact!
#Oops

As you can see I used everything I was given and I'm quite proud of that!
The BG paper is one of the pieces of paper I was given and the mat for the photos, the speech bubble, and the flower were all cut from the second piece of paper.
And then there's the frog...
When I first saw my papers, the "casino" one was on top and I was like, "Yay, Vegas!" because it's my second home but then when I dug out the embellishment,  I was like, "Ugh, Frog!" because, come on...what could I possibly do w/ a large frog sticker?! Especially in combination w/ a Vegas paper?!
Then inspiration hit: "Oh, yeah, 'Senor Frogs'!"
Good thing we like that place and I have photos...
So in the end it would up being a perfect combo for me and I was finally able to get around to scrapping some of the photos from my 13th wedding anniversary... a month after I celebrated my 16th!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the following August challenges:

>Ugly Paper
The BG Casino Paper
and the Green Paper that I used to mat the photos and for the speech bubble.
I also cut fussy-cut a flower out of it and used it as an embellishment.
Also used the "ugly" embellishment; the frog
(you can see the originals in the 2nd photo)

07/12/17 - June "Ugly Paper" Challenge

Hi, it's "Ugly Paper" time again!

First a reminder of the rules (you can skip this part if you already know them):

1. After signing up, the host gives your name and address to another participant
2. The other participant sends you 2 "ugly" papers and at least one ugly embellishment
3. You MUST use both papers; the embellishment(s) is optional

5. You are allowed to alter the papers and, if used, the embellishment(s) but they must still be recognizable

"June Uglies"

"Turok"

Journaling:
"We took Madi out to see Cirque Du Soliel's new "Avatar" inspired show Turok; Joseph was out of town.
Unfortunately we weren't impressed.
The scenery was gorgeous but the story and action was boring!
Well, at least we had Family Time.
11.5.16"

(I realized after I scanned and uploaded the layout that I forgot to fix the "year" on the date. I had originally wrote '17 so I whited it out so I can fix it to '16, but forgot to fix it, LOL. It's been fixed IRL though)

Both the ugly papers are there:
I used the "Tie Dye" PP for all my circles (3 Total) and the "Tree Branch" PP for all my triangles (3 Total).
I also used 2 of the 3 ugly embellishments:
The large "@" sign which was beige but I sprayed it an iridescent teal color AND the pink jeweled border under the photos.

It was a challenge but as usual a fun challenge.

Until next time...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also for the following SB.com June Challenges:
>No to Be Squared
Every shape on here, except for 1, is "Not a Square".
I used circles, triangles, a banner, and rounded-cornered items.

and

05/18/17 - May "Ugly Paper" Challenge

Hi, it's "Ugly Paper" time again!

First a reminder of the rules (you can skip this part if you already know them):

1. After signing up, the host gives your name and address to another participant
2. The other participant sends you 2 "ugly" papers and at least one ugly embellishment
3. You MUST use both papers; the embellishment(s) is optional
4. You are allowed to use other items as well, as long as the 2 "ugly" papers are included in the layout
5. You are allowed to alter the papers and, if used, the embellishment(s) but they must still be recognizable

"May Uglies"

"Lump In A Rug"

Journaling:
"A couple of years ago, when we redecorated part of our house, we got rid of a giant throw rug. We put it on our back patio until trash day. Well, Hamlet decided he liked it, made it his own, and it's been sitting on our patio, for him, ever since."

I used both papers:
One as the BG and one cut up in strips and staggered behind the photos.
I did not use the embellishment(s) this time.
I do believe this is the first time I've not used my embellishment(s).
But I just couldn't make them work w/ my layout.

BTW - I did my layout w/in a few days of receiving my papers...
Another first!
Usually it takes me the entire month, but I had that first photo of Hamlet already printed out for a future project and the green grass in the BG of the photo so perfectly matched the green PP that I instantly knew it was made for this layout... not to mention the colors and busy pattern of the 2nd PP were a pretty good match for the pattern on the rug in the photos.
What clinched it was my daughter just recently uploaded the second photo on Instagram making it the perfect pairing for the first photo!

Finally....
For those of you who see "it" and are wondering...

Yes, that is a duck that you see in the BG of one of the photos!
(for those who didn't see it, I'll wait while you look, LOL)

Our neighbors have a duck that seems to like our backyard better than his own! He spends like 90% of his time in our yard.
We kinda think of him as ours now, though he isn't...
And him and Hamlet seem to be great pals.
The duck follows him around and likes to lay by him when they're resting.
We don't know the duck's name or even if it's a girl or boy, but we call him "Howard" as in "Howard the duck".

04/25/17 - March "Ugly Paper" Challenge

Hi, it's "Ugly Paper" time again!

As I mentioned in a prior post, I recently lost my mojo...though I think it may be back now ::crosses fingers::.
Because of my loss of mojo I did not get my "March Ugly Paper" Challenge layout done in March.
I was able to complete it in April though and I am sharing it w/ you today.

 March "Uglies"

"A Run Through Redlands"
Journaling -

Top:
"After a 3+ yr break from running, Drs Orders, David ran a 5k and ranked
250th out of 1,243 participants! Unfortunately I was in the car trying to stay warm
and didn't get back in time to take a photo of him crossing the Finish Line; DOH!

Bottom:
"Overall Ranking: 250th out of 1,243
Male 35-39: 10th of 30
All Male: 172nd out of 542
Average Pace: 9:21
Race Completed in: 28:57.71"

(All the "stats" info is in the photo collage at the bottom as well but it's difficult to read)

The ugly papers are the BG paper and the Red Shaped paper at the bottom which I used half of in order to make a pocket to hold my husband's Runner's Bib.
I also used the "ugly" embellishment which is the "pumpkin" that I am pretending is an "orange" to fit the theme of my layout!

I used shaped paper to make a pocket for my husbands "Runner's Bib"

02/27/17 - February "Ugly Paper" Challenge

Good Morning!
Just sharing one of my latest layouts!

For the February Ugly Paper Challenge.

Reminder of the rules:

February "Uglies"

"Pigs Feet"

Journaling: "Pigs Feet... Not for eating, for holding!
Cuddles w/ Hamlet. 2.24.17"

*Oops I just realized I wrote "2016" not "2017" I need to fix that - DOH!

In case you can't tell, the Ugly Papers are the PP used for the large heart and the "baby" PP used for the large circle.
I also used some of the "ugly embellishments" - 7 heart stickers.

Fun fact: I hate "baby" PP, even for Baby Photo layouts.
Have I used them before? Probably, can't remember, but I'm sure not very many...because as I said I hate them...
Okay "hate" is a strong word, but you get it.
So receiving a Baby PP in the "Ugly Paper" challenge was definitely....challenging!

Having said that, I also have to say, this is one of my favorite layouts ever created and definitely my favorite "Ugly Paper" layout!
I love everything about it and looking at it makes me happy!

01/17/17 - January "Ugly Paper" Challenge

For the January Ugly Paper Challenge.

Reminder of the rules:

January "Uglies"

Before I show you what I created I want to mention two things:
1. I'm not a huge fan of flowers on my layouts
2. I hate bulky embellishments
The embellishment I was given is BOTH of those things; flowers and bulky

My layout:

"Alice Through the Looking Glass"
Journaling: "Saturday May 28th, 2016
Had a "date" with Joseph, "Alice", and "The Mad Hatter".

I used both "uglies": the yellow pp as my BG and the green PP as the BG to my journaling card.
I also used part of the ugly embellishment.
I cut the ribbon into two small pieces and removed all but 1 of the flowers off of each of those pieces. I then glued a third flower (only) amongst the cluster I created w/ the embellishment pieces and some flower and butterfly stickers.
The gold in the poster of the photo was what grabbed my attention and made me think it would work well with the gold/yellow PP I was given. Then because it was an "Alice in Wonderland" themed page I thought that flowers would actually work well...so even though I'm not a huge fan of flowers I wound up using quite a few to create a fun cluster!

BTW - I need to mention, that Alice In Wonderland PP and cut out is approximately 18 years old!
It is from Paper Pizazz and it is one of the first "book" of PPs I bought when I first started scrapping.
Also, the flowers and butterflies are over 10 years old.
So of course I had to enter this page in the SB.com "Hoarders" challenge!

11/21/16 - November "Ugly Paper" Challenge

For the November Ugly Paper Challenge.

Reminder of the rules:

November "Uglies"

This one was a toughie!
But here's what I came up with...

I am sharing 2 copies of the layout.
A blurry copy shot from high above w/ my camera so you can see the shininess of the papers.
And a scanned copy which is clearer but doesn't show the shininess.

"Get Away"

A photo of David and me from 2015.
We were drinking and being silly and he was taking a "selfie" of us and I decided to lean in for a kiss and he decided...
to make that face... LOL

I posted it on Instagram w/ the caption:
"Hey! Don't diss my kiss!"

I then used the caption for my journaling on this layout.

Oh, also I used the "ugly" embellishment...
Cutting off the "Summer" part of "Summer Getaway".
I used the "Getaway" even though it technically is incorrect for how I used it... "Get Away" ... I still think it works, as does the arrow.
I also cut a heart out of one of the papers to use as an embellishment.

TFL!

10/04/16 - August/September/October Ugly Paper Challenge

If the title confuses you, let me explain:
These are my August Ugly Papers, which I wasn't able to complete due to lack of mojo (starting in July)...
So I was allowed to carry over to September, but due to my continuous lack of mojo that finally lifted a bit around the middle of September...I still didn't complete my layout in time.
So I completed and am now sharing in October.
Oh well, better late than never!

Reminder of the rules:

Here are my August "ugly" papers and embellishment(s):

August Uglies

And what I did w/ them:

"National Coffee Day"
Journaling:
"What?! National Coffee Day?! Sure I'll have some, despite
the fact that EVERY day is coffee day for me,
and I already had 2 cups this morning.
-A (regular) Vanilla Cream Frappe from Kahala Coffee Traders
280cals*2P/7F/55C/1Fiber

07/26/16 - July "Ugly Paper" Challenge (and MIM #66)

It's "Ugly Paper Time" again!
(A Scrapbook.com Monthly Challenge)

A reminder of how the challenge works:

Here are my July "ugly" papers and embellishment:

My layout:

"7.21.16 - Stop, Drop, and Selfie"
Journaling: 7.21.16 - Challenged to "Stop, Drop, and Selfie" on Instagram - B&W Edition.
Included the B&W and colored version here."

The flowers were punched out of the 2 "ugly" papers.
The "ugly" embellishment, which is a fishing rod w/ a fish attached, was cut in half and used as a border: part of it in between the photos and the other part under the right hand photo w/ the journaling strips covering the fish.

I was "afraid" of the papers, and embellishment, when I first got them (YIKES!)...but once I thought of making flowers out of the papers, the layout came together really quick!
I didn't think I would use the embellishment but played around w/ it until I found a way to make it work; cutting it apart and covering some of it up definitely made it easier!

And since I have no smooth segue for this...
I'll just get right to the point:

As I mentioned before ( post ), there are 4 sketches to play w/ this month over at the "The Memory Nest Blog".
The Design Team was divided into 2 teams and each team is responsible for 2 sketches.
I mentioned I would try to complete all 4 sketches but if I couldn't I would at least share the ones I didn't complete w/ you.

Here is Team #2's Second "Make It Monday" sketch for July (which I wasn't responsible for and didn't complete a layout for):

 "MIM Sketch #66"

It's a great sketch and I really wish I had, had time to create something for it.

To see the Design Team creations click here: MIM #66
You have until July 31st to submit your entry.

06/21/16 - June "Ugly Paper" Challenge

It's "Ugly Paper Time" again!
(A Scrapbook.com Monthly Challenge)

A reminder of how the challenge works:

Here are my June "ugly" papers and embellishments (sorry about the awful photo):

(BTW - I actually like these ones!!!!)

What I created w/ them:
"Puppy Love"
Journaling: "My 2 'sons' spending quality time together".

I call our dog Spotty 'my son' also.
Just like I have 2 daughters: Madison and our dog Ivanna.
And 2 grandchildren: Madison's cat, Panini, and her pig, Hamlet.

Although the papers aren't really "ugly" or "difficult", what made the challenge even easier is
the fact that I had just taken the perfect photos for my papers 2 days before getting them!
When I took the photos I was planning on saving them for next month's SB.com "Scrap Your Pet" challenge, since I had already entered a layout for this month, but the papers were made for these photos so I used them!
I have plenty of pet photos to pick from for next month, anyway!

What I love about this particular "ugly paper" layout is, except for the journaling block, I used nothing else but the papers that were sent to me!

06/08/16 - May "Ugly Paper" Challenge

It's "Ugly Paper Time"!
(A Scrapbook.com Monthly Challenge)

A reminder of how the challenge works:

Here are my May "ugly" papers (and embellishments):

and what I created w/ them:

Journaling: "While getting construction done in our backyard, we would often have a
tractor parked in the front of our house. Madi 2 yrs old - Jan 2004"

FYI - I know that's not technically a "tractor" but that's what I call it, LOL

As is usually the case I had no idea what to do with the papers when I first received them.
Then I remembered these pictures I had taken...way, way back!
It's funny how stuff just pops into your brain out of no where!

That's my little girl, my Madi, 12 years ago at 2...
::Sigh:: time sure does fly!

To make my layout I actually cut a circle out of the BG paper and them layered it, slightly skewed, over the yellow "hello" PP (which is covering the hole I created in the BG paper when I cut out the circle). I like the effect it gave of using the entire piece of paper but not as one "whole" sheet.
And since the "baby" PP doesn't really go w/ the "truck" PP and/or the theme of the page, I covered most of it up w/ my photos and the title.
I didn't think I'd get the roses to work, but after adding the butterfly stickers, which have been in my stash FOR-EVER and  I just happened to come across while looking for something else,  I thought the roses fit; helping to make the layout a bit more "girly".

This is still one of my favorite challenges!

04/26/16 - April "Ugly Paper" Challenge

 It's "Ugly Paper Time"!
 (A Scrapbook.com Monthly Challenge)

A reminder of how the challenge works:

Here are my April "ugly" papers (and embellishments) and what I created w/ them:

 "My Monkey Man"

The Monkey Paper (BG) and Blue/Multi-color Paper the photos are on are the ugly papers.
I also used 2 of the stickers from the "ugly" sticker sheet I was sent:
The black and white circle behind the wood button (it was originally a speedometer but I covered it w/ the button to hide that)
-and-
The "Non Stop" sticker on the right-hand side.

Funny story about this layout.
The day before I received the papers my husband sent me some "selfies" he took at work.
He was hot and bored which is why he took the "selfies" (and why he's frowning in one of them).

Then next day I received my papers and I chuckled to myself.
When my husband got home I told him how the photos he had just sent me the day before were perfect for the papers I received: his monkey face and the blue/graffiti style paint in the BG of his photos were the PERFECT match!
And despite the fact that it really is a very simple layout, I love the way it looks!
As I expected the combo was perfect and throwing in a few "manly" embellishments rounded it out nicely!
