03/29/16 - March "Ugly Paper" Challenge

I wasn't planning on making this a regular feature, but then I realized that this is one of my favorite challenges over at Scrapbook.com, one that I participate in every month, and since this (blog) is where I share my creations... I might as well share my layout for this challenge here too!

A reminder of how the challenge works:
1. After signing up, the host gives your name and address to another participant
2. The other participant sends you 2 "ugly" papers and at least one ugly embellishment
3. You MUST use both papers; the embellishment(s) is optional
4. You are allowed to use other items as well, as long as the 2 "ugly" papers are included in the layout
5. You are allowed to alter the papers and, if used, the embellishment(s) but they must still be recognizable

Here are my March "ugly" papers (and embellishment) and what I created w/ them:

"...the Recipe for a Good Time"
Journaling: "You and me that's the recipe for a good time.
-Justin Timberlake 'Strawberry Bubblegum'"
Sub-journaling :"David and I at our home away from home: Vegas.
03.23.16
.a quick getaway
Spring Break"

As you can see I used the "baking themed" PP in it's entirety as my BG.

First, I must admit, I was a bit panicked when I saw the 'baking' PP... I do not bake, like EVER!
So as I put the paper aside for later use, I thought that would most likely be the paper I was going to butcher in the process of making the layout.

Fast forward to "Spring Break" week and the Vegas trip that my husband and I took together.
I wasn't thinking about scrapbooking at all but when I posted some photos to Instagram, I used the lyrics to one of my favorite Justin Timberlake songs,  "Strawberry Bubblegum",  as my caption... and unknowingly also came up w/ the concept of my layout!

The BG paper and my lyric-inspired photo caption had something in common and so I made sure to include it as my main journaling.
Cutting the typewriter paper into hearts just made sense, considering it was for photos of  me and "my love", and luckily the colors of the paper matched our photos!
Fitting the house into the layout became my next hurdle...
Then I realized, that Vegas really is our "home away from home" and decided to include that saying as my sub-journaling.

I am in love w/ this layout, not only just because I love it in general, but because I used "out-of-the-box" thinking to create it!

Oh, and thanks to the lyrics, I was able to enter it into the SB.com "March Music Challenge - Category #1: Song Lyrics".

03/28/16 -"Get Messy Habit" Weeks #7 and #8

I haven't been around...
Maybe you noticed, maybe you didn't...
it's okay.
I was on Spring Break so other than some Instagram, there wasn't a whole lot of internet/social media usage.
Which means you didn't see my most recent "Get Messy Habit" pages (unless you follow me on IG also).

Technically since we are in between "seasons" at "Get Messy" I no longer have to do this.
But I found it fun, and I like making myself commit to the weekly posting because it helps me to commit to my creating!

So w/out further ado, here are weeks #7 and #8 along w/ the captions that I wrote when posting them to Instagram:

Week #7
Official or not #GetMessyHabit has become a habit.
This week's creation is in honor of #StPatricksDay and our upcoming #BucketList goal of going to #Ireland.
The leaves were created by using a heart stencil, the stem was freehand.
Oh, and I bought a set of 8 crayola crayons from the grocery store for 99cents ☺
03/18/16

Week #8
It's 10:42 PM...
(which explains the #BadLighting)
I'm tired and ready for bed and then I remember its Friday...
Which means its #GetMessyHabit day.
So I quickly make this and now I'm off to dreamland.
Goodnight!

03/15/16 - Get Messy Week #6

Hello!
Sharing my "Get Messy" creations from last week: Week 6; AKA the last week of "Season of Happy".
I'm sad it's over but it was a lot of fun!
And as I stated in my last "Get Messy" blog post I may still go back and finish up some old prompts IF I have time.
But I honestly probably wont because a new GM Season is starting soon!
Okay on to last week's pages:

The first one is silly, but I 'm pretty sure your used to that from me by now...
For those that are new to my blog, if you plan to continue to read it...you NEED to get used to it, LOL!

This is based on an art prompt that had to do w/ making our BG a certain way...
(For GM peeps, it was Art Prompt #1 for Week 6)
The "red" part of my BG follows that guideline.

The rest of it was my own creation based on the quote I wrote on the PL card:
Here's the quote in case you can't read my writing:

“‘When you wake up in the morning, Pooh,’ said Piglet at last, ‘what’s the first thing you say to yourself’
‘What’s for breakfast?’ said Pooh. ‘What do you say, Piglet?’
‘I say, I wonder what’s going to happen exciting today’ said Piglet.
Pooh nodded thoughtfully. ‘It’s the same thing,’ he said.”

-A. A. Milne

Technically the quote was just shared w/ us; it wasn't part of any art or journal prompt.
But I really liked it! It made my smile and it resonated w/ my love of food!

"Food"

Journaling: "Despite losing 28lbs and still counting calories to maintain the
loss, I still LOVE food...just in moderation!
#Foodie"

I have never been a fan of Winnie the Pooh, but now I feel a kinship w/ him, LOL
I really do love food!
People don't believe that, or that I even eat, because of how "skinny" (their words not mine) I am.
But you can eat food, enjoy food, love food without overindulging... again, it's about moderation.
And I have been maintain my weight loss while still enjoying all of my favorite foods, for almost a year now. If you're wondering, some of my favorite foods are cookies, ice cream, nachos, fast food, and high calorie Starbucks drinks, the list goes on... so yes, it can be done!

For the page I used red and yellow as my color scheme because those are the colors of Pooh; he's yellow/gold and wears a red polo shirt.
I thought the BG was a bit boring so I spruced it up w/ rows of different lengths of "paw print" washi tape, one of my favorite tapes, because bears have paws.
Finally I added a some fun glitter yellow alphas and a button because I've been all about the buttons (again) lately!

The second page is inspired by a prompt but the way it came to be was not intentional.

"Happiness is..."

The double page spread says "Happiness is...taking a risk and it working out" but it could also be called "Happiness is...finding a fun way to use up leftover or rejected craft items" because that's what most of this page is:

- The black and white BG was created for a scrapbook page I was working on, but I didn't like the way it looked with the rest of the page. I just going to place it in my scrap stash but then I realized that w/ a little bit of trimming it would fit well in my art journal.

- The photo was rejected because I had forgotten to check the settings on my printer before printing it and the colors printed a bit distorted. I really didn't want to throw it away though, so I just glued it on to the B&W BG I had just adhered to my art journal. I love the way after I glued it in and worked on another art journal page behind it, that the rubbing against the back of the photo kind of distressed the front of it a bit... Totally unintentional but love the look!

-The "happy" flower embellishment is a mini bag that I found in my stash while looking for another item. I knew I would never use it on a layout, and since it had the word "happy" on it and we are in the "Season of Happy" and Madi is "happy" in the photos, it just made sense to add it to the page as well.

-The yellow journaling spot was a piece I cut off of another journaling spot for a layout I was making The original journaling spot was too long and consisted of a large and a small journaling spot separate from each other. I cut the small part off and thought it would be perfect for the "title" spot on this page.

The only pieces I purposely chose for this project were the "Live For Today" sticker, the yellow buttons, and the file label to write journaling on: "Madison cuts off most of her hair & streaks it purple (and loves it!)"

So this page is truly a "happy" accident.
BTW -
The layout I shared yesterday, is where all the rejected/leftover pieces came from: Madi's New Locks

Okay, so that's it for today.

I find it funny that I say that after practically writing a book!
I'm an introvert by nature, but once I start "talking" you can't shut me up, LOL!

03/15/16 - Madi's New Locks

I got scrappy over the weekend!
Actually I should say I got "crafty" because I also worked on Art Journal pages, but since this post is about a scrapbook layout, I'm choosing to say "scrappy".
I created 2 layouts:  the one I shared yesterday which was created for a DT assignment MIM #56.

And the one I am sharing today which was for fun (but just so happened to also fit 5 different Scrapbook.com challenges, LOL!):

"Madi's New Locks"
Journaling: "And 'boom' ... just like that I win the "Cool Mom of the Year" award! I took Madi
to get her hair the way she's been wanting it... Madi's new, shorter, purple locks!
I'm so jealous! 3.5.16 'The Glam Box Salon' - Redlands"

Madison has been wanting her hair short for years!!!
My husband was not to thrilled w/ the idea of his daughter cutting all her hair off so the shortest he would agree to was a little below chin length and a simple "bob" design.
Madi was also wanting color in her hair.
The first time we put color in it was blue, and he said,  "just a few streaks". The second time was red and he didn't say anything, but I think he was thinking the same thing, "just a few", I had the hairdresser put in more than a "few" and he was a bit upset; I think he was actually more shocked than anything (Madi's Red Hair).
Madison REALLY loved it though!
Seeing my daughter so happy w/ her look, especially since her self-esteem is going through a low phase,  (You Don't Know You're Beautiful) , made me happy too!
So when it came time to do her hair again I asked her to tell me what she wanted...
She said "short and purple"... I though, "oh your dad's going to hate it!". But I also thought... it's just hair, it grows back, the color can be dyed back, it's not a permanent change....
So I decided to just let her do it.
Though we kept one side long, because she likes to hid behind her hair, and completely short hair wouldn't allow her to do that...plus we just think it's a really cool style"!

I did warn my husband beforehand, and either he wasn't listening (or was in denial) or he didn't grasp
how significant the change was, but when he saw it he was beyond "Not a Happy Camper".
I think he didn't "talk" to us for like 2 days...when he did talk there was a whole lot of, "I hate it"...LOL
I knew that might happen, but honestly, I didn't care.
I knew he'd get over it and I was just happy that my daughter was happy!
The way I see it, this is her time to experiment.
We have the money and I have the resources to find a good hairdresser, both things my mom didn't have when I was young. And truly, her hair is the only thing she cares about (well besides music). She really doesn't ask for anything.
When she gets older she may not have the freedom.
I'm dealing w/ that dilemma now, I wish I could dye my hair those type of colors, but at 40, yeah it's a bit late in game.
So yeah, we did it.. and we don't regret it for a second!

If your thinking the first photo doesn't exactly "fit" it's because I had to use a random photo of Madi from my archives. 'Silly me' forgot to take a "before" picture prior to the start of the cut & color. Duh! Luckily I got some "during" and, of course, "after" photos.
The "before" photo is only a month old though so it was a great representation of what her hair looked like prior.

I had so much fun w/ this layout, just adding all the fun little embellishments, that I almost don't mind that I pretty much hid the main starting element: the purple circle, LOL!
Yes, that's right... the purple circle peeking out behind the bottom photo was supposed to be a major part of the layout but I just kept going w/ the embellishments and eventually I realized it could barely be seen! Oh well, sometimes a design goes in it's own direction and luckily, like in this case, that direction ends up in a layout I love!

*Note: black sticker above bottom photo(s) says "THIS JUST HAPPENED" in gold.
I'm finding these stickers don't photograph well.

-This is layout #16 for 2016
Total Layout count so far =17

03/14/16 - MIM #56

Happy "Make it Monday" to you!

This is the second "The Memory Nest" sketch for March 2016.
You have until the last day of March to submit an entry for this sketch or the one we revealed on March 7th: MIM#55.

MIM #56

"Hamlet's First Birthday"
Journaling: "Happy Birthday to this guy! Today is Hamlet's 1st birthday!
He had an apple w/ crunchy Peanut Butter and whipped cream as his
Birthday Treat; he loved it! BTW it's also National Pig Day!
March 1st, 2016"

I was so excited to scrap this photo but couldn't find any birthday paper!
I did have 2 birthday papers in my stash but they just didn't work well w/ the photo.
So I thought outside the box and used a colorful "number" paper.
In order to make it look like a birthday page I added a birthday hat embellishment (it was my last so luckily it was blue and not pink!) and a journaling card that said "Happy" on it, to which I added "birthday" in brown to match the dominant color in the photo.
And of course I HAD to add the cute pig sticker...which happened to be pink so I was able to have an excuse to use the "remember this" cut out... but I balanced it w/ 2 other blue accents.
This layout actually came together pretty quickly! The most time consuming part was digging through my stash! I swear as organized as I am, I always have trouble finding things!!!
Anyway... love this layout; definitely worthy of a celebration!

(If you're wondering what that sticker under Hamlet says, it's "This is Pretty Special" in gold; it didn't show up well in the photo).

03/10/16 - "Get Messy Habit" Week #6

It's Friday!
My Friday off...whoop-whoop!

And it's also my "Get Messy Habit" day!

This is week #6 that I have consistently posted an art journal creation of mine.
Which is/was the goal of "Get Messy Habit".
It took me a bit to find my groove, but I did it.

> I had started out posting a "random" page - Week 1
> Then I posted 2 pages that were inspired by (a) "Get Messy" prompts(s)/season - Week 2
But then I considered that "cheating" and decided that "Get Messy Habit" creations should
be in addition to the prompt/season inspired creations
>So then I posted another random page - Week 3 (this is also when I started blogging them as a
separate project) Blog Post GMH Wk #3
>And another - Week 4 / Blog Post GMH Wk #4
>And yet another - Week 5 / Blog Post GMH Wk #5

And finally we are here today - Week 6.

I made 2 pages this week because I felt like I should make up for "cheating" on Week 2 (even though it wasn't intentional).
And also I had so much fun making the 1st page I wanted to make another.

"Got Abstract?"/"Abstract #2"
(And a couple of clips to hold my pages down for photographing since,my art journal is
a wreck - but a "happy", "well-loved" wreck!).

I went full elementary school mode  w/ coloring!
I haven't colored like that in a long time and it was not only fun but freeing!

A couple of Christmases ago I asked for and received an "adult" coloring book... No not that kind of "adult", get your mind out of the gutter, LOL... and some markers and I liked it at first but quickly got bored. The adult coloring books are very detailed and to me it was too much work.
I don't want to work when I'm coloring; that takes all the fun out of it!
So I will stick w/ this method instead.

Wow, I can't believe the 6 weeks are over already!!
Also over?
"Get Messy - Season of Happy"...
Although because I post my pages a week behind I will have some  "happy" pages to share next week.
Plus, I may go back and create for the prompts I haven't yet completed...
so hopefully there will be a lot more "happy" coming at you through out the year, both IRL and from my blog!

Oh and the end of "Season of Happy" means the start of another "Season".
I don't know what it is yet but I'll find out soon enough and you will too!

Before I leave I thought I would circle round back to "adult" and "coloring" w/ this funny little video from "Sex in the City"...

Hope you enjoy!

03/09/16 - Get Messy Week #5

Hello!
Sharing my "Get Messy" creations from last week, Week 5.

The first page  was actually inspired by a "Get Messy" journal prompt from Week # 4...
Yeah I'm a little behind, but inspiration doesn't always strike when you want it to.
Anyway...
The prompt had us listen to/read the lyrics to Baz Luhrmann’s song Everybody’s Free to Wear Sunscreen  and then...
well I can't tell you the rest but I can tell you that this page was inspired by 2 verses in that song:
"Do NOT read beauty Magazines, they will only make you feel ugly."
and
"You're not as fat as you imagine"

 "Do NOT Read Beauty Magazines"

I chose those 2 lines because as a person who has always had body issues I was just drawn to them.
I struggled w/ my weight and body image all my life, I put myself on my first diet at the age of 10 (no kidding!) and even went through bouts of bulimia and anorexia.
Even now, after having recently lost 28 pound the correct way, I still look in the mirror and see flaws.
But I am learning to love myself.
I feel much better now after having lost the weight, and most importantly I am healthier, but after spending almost 30 years of your life "hating" your body it's not easy to get out of that mind frame.

So the quotes are from that song and the photos are from the online site for Tilly's clothing store; Tilly's is my favorite place to shop!

And I didn't realize until AFTER I added the quotes to my page that they both contained the word "not". When I did realize, I decided to highlight them to make them stand out and to add some extra color to the page.

And before I forget... if you get a chance, check out the song/lyrics:

I think you'll also enjoy it!

My second page came from 3 sources of inspiration:
1. A "Get Messy " Art prompt from Week 5  - it had to do w/ listening to music...
    again can't go into detail.
2. the "Get Messy - Season of Happy".
3. A fellow Get Messian who recently did an art journal about her love of coffee.
She inspired me because even though I do truly love my coffee, I've already done a coffee page and thought I shouldn't do another one, even if it was a different type of page, but when I saw hers I felt the NEED to create it!

The quote in black, on the top on the left hand page, and the "Too Much Is Never Enough", repeated on the right hand page, are lyrics from  the song "Never Enough" by One Direction.
Yes, them again!!
Well, it IS the "Season of Happy" and it was a music prompt so "Happy Music" to me = 1D
#SorryNotSorry

"Never Enough...Coffee"
"Get Messy" Week 5 Art Prompt Got Me Like:
 - Serenading my cup of coffee w/ a One Direction Song, LOL

Journaling: "I love coffee a little too much. If it wasn't for the calories, I would drink
it ALL DAY everyday. Unfortunately I'll just have to settle for 2-4 cups a day
(usually just 2)"

IG Link: Never Enough...Coffee

So there you have it!
I wasn't as creative this past week: only 1 layout and 2 art journal pages
But I've created more in the 3 months of this year than I did ALL of last year!

And I have 2 3 more art journal ideas in my head to go w/ the Week 5 prompts...
too bad we are in week 6 though!

03/08/16 - March "Round Robin" Challenge

This month I have signed up for 2 Inspiration Challenges over at Scrapbook.com.

Today I am showing you one of my layouts (the other I haven't completed yet).

The was created for the "Round Robin" Challenge:
"There are teams of 4 people, one person for each week, similar to a relay race. The person assigned for week 1 in each group will start their team off with a layout depending on what the specs and twist will be. Then the following week, everyone assigned to week 2 will lift off their week 1 team member and so on. It's fun to see how a lift progresses from the first week to the fourth."

I was week 1 for my team.
This was the starting inspiration (not created by me):

"Romance"

I went a whole other direction w/ it, pun intended,  while still including some of the original in my design.
I went for funny (though true) with my layout.
I also included the challenge's twist of "write a letter as part of your LO".
I wrote a letter to One Direction, LOL.

"Dear One Direction"
(It's on a white BG which is difficult to see on my blog BG)

Journaling: "March 5th, 2016
Dear One Direction - I'm 40 yrs old and a huge fan. I've loved your music since taking my daughter to your concert in Sept 2014. She has since outgrown you but I've become a bigger fan. I've been listening to your latest cd , "Made in the AM", almost daily since buying it in Nov 2015. Thanks for the great music! -Signed Mom who loves 1D
P.S. Please don't break up!"

I realize to some it may be silly... but I love music, especially Boy Band music and thought it would be fun to capture this time of my life and what group/artist I was into at the time.
After all... good, bad, ugly, funny... scrapbooking is all about capturing memories, right?

03/07/16 - MIM #55

And... it's... Monday.... Again!
How do they keep coming so fast?!

IDK but they do.
But luckily so do Make it Monday sketches from "The Memory Nest"!
Remember you can win a prize for creating and linking a project over at the blog!

Here is the current sketch, sketch #55:

And my, less flowery, version... because I'm not much for flowers...
I love how the "doily and horizontal banner" embellishments in the sketch were already part of the design of the 4x6 card I used in my layout!

"Her Happy Face"
Journaling: "I told Panini to smile... She said "I am"!
Apparently this IS her happy face.
And...she stole my blanket!
#CatsAreJerks
02.10.16"

Cats...gotta love them! LOL!

BTW I have to point out that BG paper... not only does it match Panini PERFECTLY... it is SO OLD! I have had that paper in my stash FOREVER (okay exaggerating but not by much)!
I had all the other elements of the page ready to go but could not find a BG piece that would work. I looked through (almost) ALL of my papers a few times when I suddenly remembered this old "Fall Stack " I had. A lot of the papers in there I didn't really care for but I've never been able to bring myself to throw it out.... Good thing!

For those of you who don't regularly read my blog, the paper is from the same paper stack I used for the background of this layout:Such a Good Boy. I'm so happy that I was able to find a good "home" for both papers!

03/04/16 - "Get Messy Habit" Week #5

It's Friday!

Today I am sharing my "Get Messy Habit" week #5 page.

A reminder of what  "Get Messy Habit" is:
A group inside the "Get Messy" group.
As part of that group I have made a commitment to post at least one Art Journal page a week on a day I designate.
Friday is my day.

Quote along the side comes from a convo I had with @cayleegrey.
Caylee is one of the co-creators of @GetMessyArtJournal and, as I have dubbed her, "Our Fearless Leader".
(@LaurenLikesBlog is the other part of that equation).
I mentioned to Caylee that I was worried that my style of art was not "real art"... And she responded,

"Anything you make is real art".

It gave me reassurance and I included it on my latest page as a reminder to myself.

Supplies: yellow and blue chalk fluid, The Crafter's Workshop viewmaster template, Memento Tuxedo Black ink, Kaisercraft acrylic stamps, black sharpie.

03/02/16 - Get Messy Week #4

If you've been reading my blog this week you know that I'm late w/ my Monday "Get Messy" post.

A reminder... those posts consists of my sharing my Art Journal pages inspired by the prior week's "Get Messy" prompts because every Monday a new set of prompts is provided.

I have been a busy bee this week as far as posting...
This after stating I would be posting only once a week: Dead Pool Valentines.... ( clickable link)
That always seems to happen... when I make a plan, the opposite occurs...

(I will NOT win the Lottery... Doesn't hurt to try right?! LOL)

So here are my pages:
I created 4 total, but I already shared 1 of them:  You Remind Me... (clickable link)

These 2 were inspired by the "Pixar - Inside Out" Prompt.
They were both fun to make and I love the colors but my favorite is the "Spirit Animal" one (left hand side).

Journaling:
(left) DISGUST is My SPIRIT ANIMAL -
"cuz that expression is the one I have on my face most of the time (especially at
work) and our thought process is almost identical.
Also, she just so happens to be voiced by one of my favorite actress/comedians
- Mindy Kaling- and is the ONLY REASON I watched "INSIDE OUT"
'Disgust is highly opinionated and extremely honest. She always has the best of
intentions  and refuses to lower her standards' ---> (as written by) Disney Wiki"

(right) Pixar's "Inside Out"-
"Meet the little voices inside your head" ("Inside Out" tagline)

The washi tape and buttons represent each emotion and in the order they fit into my personality.

This next page comes from a different prompt and a prompt from a previous week; Week 3.
We were encouraged to be inspired by the following quote:

"Take pleasure in the rich random patterns in your life" - Hector and the Search for Happiness.

Before I share the page I want to explain it...
For some strange reason when I was reading "patterns" my brain was thinking "routine".
IDK why... it just was... every time!
It wasn't until after I made my page that it dawned on me that the word was "patterns" and not "routine"... but by then it was too late.
No worries though because I still like the page and how the main element of it, the cartoon w/ the orange BG, truly represents my thoughts on "routine".
And technically the prompt was 'to be inspired by' the quote, not create a page based on it exactly!

As I stated the photo with the orange BG is how I feel about routine...
The Pinky and the Brain was just added because of the fact that they had the same "routine" every night which goes w/ my thought process at the time I was making my page.
And then I just added the quote in my own handwriting and a quick additional note about how I feel about routine:
"I have a -Love/Hate- relationship w/ routine"

There you have it.
Another week of Get Messy completed!
Wow 4 weeks already?!? That was quick!

03/01/16 - February "Gallery Inspiration" Challenge

I mentioned in my previous blog post, Such a Good Boy,  that I created 3 layouts this past weekend.
I also mentioned I would be sharing 2 of the 3 this week.
This is the 2nd one I wanted to share.

I created a layout for the February "Gallery Inspiration" Challenge over at Scrapbook.com.
The challenge is that the inspiration piece is selected by the person who signs up after you.
This was the inspiration layout chosen for me:

(Remember... not my creation)

Although beautiful it is definitely NOT my style!

As you will see from my lift I incorporated a few elements: scattered sequins, folded corner, stamping in the bottom right... but my layout is simpler and has a way different feel.
But I WAS inspired by the layout and I really love the outcome!

"Yum (Bourbon Hot Chocolate)"
Journaling: "Drinks with friends at "The District" in Downtown Redlands.
Tried my first Bourbon Hot Chocolate.
It was yummy!"
